First of all, Mr. Hoppe, thank you for taking the time to give us this interview. You have written in your new book, Der Wettbewerb der Gauner (“The Competition of Crooks”), that “We don’t need a European super state, which the European Union is seeking to establish … but rather a Europe and world consisting of hundreds or even thousands of tiny Liechtensteins and Singapores.” Such a trend is not apparent at the moment, rather the opposite. Do things first have to get even worse – politically and economically – , before they get better again? Unfortunately, I’m afraid so. Leaders of most European countries lead their country towards economic disaster, which may be associated with unpredictable social consequences. Development of economic indicators in recent years relentlessly convicts European leaders from ungovernableness of their task. The fact is, that European leaders are not able to manage the economy to reverse the negative trend of increasing debt. With the exception of two countries the countries of Europe increasingly go into debt. According to Eurostat by the end of 2011 EU27 debt rose to about EUR 10.5 billion, which is in comparison with 2005 an increase of over 52%.
